English as a Second Language

Classes in English as a Second Language are offered for beginners through advanced students, mornings and evenings in our classrooms in our West Chester location. Reading, writing, speaking, and English comprehension are developed in the context of real-life and workplace situations. 

To attend a class, please call the Educational Director, Maryann Stravous at 610-235-4588.
You must make an appointment and meet with her before you can attend a class. You will be required to attend class twice per week.

GED TESTING CENTER

The competition for jobs is intense. A high school diploma is a necessity. Don’t be at a disadvantage! It’s never too late to get ahead. We can prepare you for the General Education diploma examination.

All test takers need to register on www.myged.com. Scheduled test takers need to arrive no later than 15 minutes before their scheduled test time to go through admittance process.

The new GED Testing Center in Chester County is now open at the PA CareerLink in Exton!

Chester County OIC is the contracted Site Administration. Jacqueline Painter is the Center Administrator and Test Proctor. For further information please call 484-364-1566 and leave a voicemail. Calls will be returned within 24 hours. If callers would like to speak to someone immediately, they should call CCOIC at the main number, 610-692-2344 and press “0” for the receptionist.

GED Classes conducted by CCOIC partner agencies – Phoenixville, Oxford, Downingtown and Coatesville

Classes in Phoenixville are held from 6:00PM-8:30 PM on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Phoenixville Middle School, beginning September 2014.

Classes in Oxford are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 10AM to 1PM at the Oxford Presbyterian Church, beginning September 2014.

Classes in Downingtown are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Chester County Intermediate Unit, beginning September 2014

Adult Tutoring Program

The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (CC-OIC) partners with the Chester County Library, Exton Branch to provide FREE one-on-one tutoring for adult learners (18+) who would like help with:

  • Reading, writing & spelling
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • High School Equivalency/GED, TEAS, etc.

The student meets with his or her tutor at a public location for a minimum of 3 hours a week in order to work on the student’s goals. In addition, the student and tutor are able to utilize the Exton Library’s Literacy Collection. Contact Debbie Rikess (drikess@cc-oic.org  or 610-280-2605) if you are interested in working with a tutor to advance your educational and career goals.

VOLUNTEER TUTORS NEEDED!

Help an adult learner achieve success! Contact us if you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor and want to help make a difference in someone’s life.

The only requirement to becoming a tutor is a 4 year college degree, teaching experience is not needed. Tutor Training is now offered online through the PA Department of Education. We also offer additional training throughout the year at the Chester County Library. Tutors are asked to meet with their students 3 hours per week, usually in two sessions of 1 ½ hours.
